It happens on many a Triangle commute: You’re driving down Interstate 40 and suddenly have to slam on the brakes. A car ahead is slinking along at a snail’s pace – despite a free-and-clear right lane.

The resulting logjam does more than make you late for work, contends state Sen. Jeff Tarte (R-Mecklenburg). He says it’s a serious safety issue, and he’s filed a law that would make the slowpoke shift lanes, or else pay a $200 fine.
