Consumer advocacy group Families USA hired the CMS Medicaid waiver chief Eliot Fishman as its new senior director of health policy.

Fishman currently leads the federal government’s work with states on Medicaid waivers as director of the CMS’ State Demonstrations Group.

He will start at Families USA on May 1.

Fishman previously served as the director of the Children and Adults Health Programs Group at the CMS. Before that, he was a principal at consulting firm Health Management Associates, where he focused on Medicaid delivery system and payment reforms and streamlining program eligibility, enrollment and retention.

He has also worked as vice president in the Metropolitan Jewish Health System, a not-for-profit integrated delivery system in New York. He was also New Jersey Department of Health’s director of the office of policy.

“Eliot will be critical in our work to ensure that the Trump administration’s efforts around Medicaid and private coverage help and not harm America’s families,” said Frederick Isasi, the new executive director of Families USA.

Isasi, formerly a director at the bipartisan National Governors Association, was named executive director in January. He took over from Ron Pollack, who announced last May he would step down from the consumer advocacy group he co-founded 36 years ago.
