Google-owned traffic app Waze this week expanded its carpooling pilot project to the entire nine-county Bay Area, Sacramento and Monterey.

The company began the pilot last year with a select group of carpoolers in San Francisco and Mountain View. It’s running a similar project in Israel, where Waze was founded.

The company is quick to point out that the service is not designed to compete with ride-sharing apps like Lyft or Uber. Drivers and riders are capped to two rides per day, essentially…
