U.S. Xpress Laying Off 100 in Tennessee, Georgia

Truckload carrier U.S. Xpress Enterprises said it is laying off 100 employees — all nondrivers — at two southeastern locations, citing a change in “company focus.”

The company employs about 10,000 people nationwide, and the 1% reduction applies to employees at the headquarters in Chattanooga, Tenn., and a nearby location in Tunnel Hill, Ga.

The layoffs were reported by the Times Free Press of Chattanooga and the city’s three television stations. Confirmation from a U.S. Xpress representative was not available on short notice.

U.S. Xpress, which ranks No. 21 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of for-hire carriers, is the seventh-largest truckload carrier on the list.

The story from the Times Free Press said the layoffs would affect “corporate support staff” rather than drivers.
