American Airlines (Nasdaq: AAL) will end codeshare relationships with the Middle East carriers Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways, the Fort Worth-base airline said Wednesday.

The decision stems from a dispute over rapid U.S. expansion by three subsidized Middle East carriers – Etihad, Emirates and Qatar. American Airlines and other large U.S. airlines contend the Middle East carriers’ expansion violate Open Skies accords, which are similar to a trade agreements.
