Hawaiian Electric Co. and the state Department of Transportation Airport Division Wednesday said the emergency power facility at Honolulu International Airport is in full operation after years of testing.

The facility, which features four generators and provides up to 10 megawatts of power, was built by and is owned by the state, according to a statement.

During non-emergencies, the biofuel generators are operated by HECO and will provide electricity to the grid.
