New York City’s taxicab industry has been in trouble for a while.

Smartphone users preferred “e-hailing” over throwing their hands in the air, boosting the appeal of Uber and other competing on-demand car services.

Cab drivers also changed their tune. They could download multiple apps (Uber, Lyft or Gett) and opt out of leasing medallions from big-shots like the “Taxi King” Gene Freidman. Plus, they could use their own car and create their own schedules.
