Silicon Valley was built on the corporate campus model: A spread of low-rise buildings surrounded by fields of parking that allows tech companies maximum floor-plan and expansion/contraction flexibility during their boom-and-bust life cycles.

But a report from SPUR, the Bay Area’s nonprofit planning and urban research group, says such campuses are largely responsible for the Silicon Valley’s horrendous commutes and threaten the region’s economic success.
