The Port of Virginia says cargo traffic in March was the fourth busiest in its history and grew 9% compared to a year ago.
The achievement comes weeks before it expects the biggest ship to ever call on an East Coast port to arrive, when it will drop off and pick up an estimated 4,000 containers.
The agency said April 10 that it handled 232,148 TEUs, or containers measured in 20-foot increments, in March, nearly 19,000 more than the same month in 2016.
Of that increase, the port had 11,536 more imported and exported containers containing goods. About 7,400 of the additional 20-foot equivalent units were empty.
