The Army Corps of Engineers said April 5 the Port of Savannah’s shipping channel will cost $973 million to deepen, 38 percent more than the project was estimated to cost, according to WABE.

Since 2014, the agency has estimated the deepening would cost $703 million.

The project, which will deepen 39 miles of the Savannah River to make way for larger cargo shops to reach the port, kicked off in 2015.
