One of the women who received a settlement from Bill O’Reilly after making sexual harassment allegations against the top-rated Fox News host sharply criticized President Trump on Wednesday for defending Mr. O’Reilly.

“I’m saddened reading your comments,” Rebecca Gomez Diamond said in a series of Twitter posts directed at the president, who had said in an interview that he did not think Mr. O’Reilly did anything wrong. “Truly disappointed and vilified all over again. Such comments tell women they won’t be believed.”

Her statements came several days after an investigation by The New York Times showed that five women had received settlement payments from Mr. O’Reilly after making claims of sexual harassment or other inappropriate behavior. The payments totaled about $13 million, The Times reported.

The Twitter posts on Wednesday were the first time Ms. Diamond had spoken publicly about the issue. In 2011, she received a payout from Mr. O’Reilly after she said that he had sexually harassed her. Ms. Gomez Diamond had recordings of Mr. O’Reilly, and as part of the deal, she agreed not to speak about her allegations, people familiar with the case said.

“I have merit,” Ms. Diamond wrote on Twitter on Wednesday morning.

In an interview on Wednesday in the Oval Office with reporters for The Times, Mr. Trump defended Mr. O’Reilly, whose show he has appeared on for years.

“I think he’s a person I know well — he is a good person,” Mr. Trump said as he discussed foreign affairs, surrounded by his top aides.

“Personally, I think he shouldn’t have settled,” he said. “Because you should have taken it all the way. I don’t think Bill did anything wrong.”

Mr. O’Reilly has denied the allegations against him, saying that he was “vulnerable to lawsuits from individuals who want me to pay them to avoid negative publicity.”

Mr. O’Reilly has not spoken publicly about the allegations since The Times published the article on Saturday. Nearly 30 companies who advertise on his show have told the network they no longer want their ads to appear on his program.

Ms. Gomez Diamond left Fox News in 2011, and has not worked in television news since.
