Bertha faced daylight Tuesday afternoon nearly four years after the boring machine’s journey beneath Seattle began.

Chewing its way into a pit near Seattle Center, the end to Bertha’s 1.7-mile drive beneath Seattle came 64 years – to the day – since the Alaskan Way Viaduct first opened to traffic.
