American Airlines’ employee count rose 2 percent, and Southwest’s jumped 8.1 percent as overall airline employment rose for the 39th consecutive month, according to the latest tally by the U.S. Bureau of Transportation statistics.

American Airlines (Nasdaq: AAL), the parent of Dayton-based PSA Airlines, employed 99,490 workers nationwide in January 2017, the most recent month available. Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV) employed 54,041, according to the statistics released this week.
