Apple is holding an event on Tuesday, starting at 10 a.m. Pacific time, at the new Steve Jobs Theater at its new campus in Cupertino, Calif., to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the iPhone. Here’s what you can expect to see, from products to pricing.
• A series of new iPhones that will include, for the first time, a premium model with a $999 starting price, which some are calling the iPhone X. With the higher starting price, the new iPhone will join Samsung’s $950 Galaxy Note 8 to establish a luxury tier of smartphones that caters to tech enthusiasts with high disposable income. There will be cheaper models as well.
• The high-end iPhone is set to introduce a new method for unlocking the device known as infrared face recognition. It will also include the ability to charge with magnetic induction, similar to the Apple Watch. In addition, Apple made room for a large OLED display by reducing the size of the bezel — the forehead and the chin on the face of the device.
• There is also likely to be hardware upgrades for the Apple Watch, including a model that has cellular connectivity, which could help the smart watch work more independently. (Current versions of the Apple Watch lack a cellular connection and rely on the iPhone to fully function.) Apple will also add more fitness capabilities for the device.
• Stay tuned. Brian X. Chen, Farhad Manjoo and Vindu Goel, technology reporters and columnists for The New York Times, will be at the event to tell you about it.
