Goldman Sachs Chief Lloyd Blankfein has weighed in on the Trump administration’s decision, announced Tuesday, to phase out a program that protected young, undocumented immigrants from deportation.
In a message on his verified Twitter account Tuesday afternoon, Blankfein said “Immigration is a complex issue but I wouldn’t deport a kid who was brought here and only knows America. Congress must address. #DACA”
The hash-tagged acronym stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era protection for immigrants brought to the United States as young children. On Tuesday, the administration said it would end the program in March unless Congress acted.
The has drawn some sharp criticism, not the least of which is from former President Obama, who called it “cruel” and “self-defeating.”
Blankfein, whose former second-in-command at Goldman, Gary Cohn, is now President Trump’s top economic advisor, has taken to Twitter in the past to criticize the administration, though not always so directly. Last month he appeared to troll the president in a tweet about the eclipse. He previously called out the White House’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate-change accord.
