The total number of passengers on U.S. airlines and foreign airlines serving the country rose to a record level in 2016.

According to new data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, the systemwide passenger count in 2016 was 928.9 million, up 3.5 percent from the previous high set in 2015.

The number of passengers on domestic flights increased 3.3 percent year over year.
